Why The Mindy Project was so important to brown people
What can you say about Mindy? Well she's literally everything, so you can basically keep going on and on. Mindy has been a source of inspiration for many of us brown creators. Looking at what she has done and navigating through her many accomplishments, made us feel like our dreams could become a reality. When I first saw the giant billboard for The Mindy Project as I drove past the FOX lot on "Pico Blvd," my heart irrupted. It was the first time I'd ever seen a brown face as the lead of a series. I was excited and afraid because I knew that the industry would be watching Mindy's every move. If the Mindy Project failed, they would halt the opportunity for another brown lead for a very long time. I then watched the pilot and I knew at that moment, Mindy changed everything for us and that first episode was everything we wanted. She was smart, she was funny, she was just awesome. We watched Mindy grow season by season and slowly more brown faces started to make their way as series regulars on TV shows, and they weren't your typical stereotypes. They were real people. So I just wanted to take the time to thank you Mindy Kaling for helping shift our narrative. You have changed the industry and how the world looks at brown people as a whole.
