'Never Have I Ever' Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Breakout Maitreyi Ramakrishnan stars in the comedy based on Mindy Kaling's formative years.

Netflix is delivering some good news.

The streaming giant has handed out a second-season renewal for comedy Never Have I Ever, the scripted comedy series based on Mindy Kaling's formative years.

The comedy starring newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has been one of the breakout word-of-mouth hits of the coronavirus-induced quarantine since its late April premiere.

While Netflix does not release traditional viewership data, the series has an impressive 96 and 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics and viewers, respectively. The Hollywood Reporter's TV critic Inkoo Kang said the single-camera comedy overcomes early obstacles and "streamlines into a deeply moving exploration of a teenage girl falling apart because she can't bear to deal with her grief."

Kaling and Lang Fisher (The Mindy Project) co-created the coming-of-age comedy based on the actress, writer and producer's childhood. Ramakrishnan landed the lead role after an open casting call that drew 15,000 responses. She stars as Devi, a modern-day, first-generation Indian American teenage girl. The cast includes Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Jaren Lewison, Darren Barnet, Lee Rodriguez and Ramona Young.

The series hails from Universal Television and marks the last project Kaling set up before moving her overall deal from the Comcast-backed studio to Warner Bros. TV. Kaling, Fisher and 3 Arts' Howard Klein and David Miner exec produce.
